Is there a proper fitting bicycle for you?

Is there a proper fitting bicycle for you?

Most people don’t think about it, but there is a proper fit for a bicycle. If you regularly ride a bike that doesn’t ‘fit’, you could throw your entire body out of whack and cause some pretty uncomfortable subluxations.

The first thing to consider is the frame size. If the frame isn’t the right size for you, the entire bike-riding experience won’t be right for you either. You should be able to straddle the bicycle while able to have both of your feet flat on the ground, with about an inch or two of clearance. Bicycle frame sizes aren’t standardised; it really depends on the manufacturer. When shopping for a bike, you actually have to try it on like you would shoes!

The next thing you must think about is the saddle height. You know the saddle height is ideal when your foot is resting on the pedal at its lowest point and your knee is bent slightly. As you adjust the saddle height, make sure you are wearing the shoes you would be wearing when you ride the bike.

If you are looking for a new bike, keep these things in mind when you visit the bike shop. If you already have a bike, the professionals at the shop should be able to help you adjust your current bicycle. Once you have your bike optimised for your body, it won’t hurt to see your chiropractor to work out any misalignments so that you are working with a clean slate and a properly fitting bike!

For more information about how a bicycle should fit your body, and about the wellness and prevention orientation of chiropractic treatment, call your chiropractor to arrange an appointment.
